For much of season 5 of the popular Netflix show, Holly Wheeler and Max find themselves trapped in a realm of memories constructed from the memories of Henry Creel. The search for freedom in "Escape from Camazotz" leads them to relive a life-altering moment from Henry's childhood—an event that potentially carries the means to overcome him permanently.

Spoiler Warning: The following contains major spoilers for the second part of the final season.

The Discovery in the Mine Shaft

After locating Max in the mental landscape dubbed Camazotz, it becomes clear she is hiding out in a chamber that Henry avoids at all costs. By leaving the lens cap on a telescope pilfered from Henry's old home helps Holly understand that the true terror lies outside of the cave. Matching her view through the cap, she and Max suddenly fall into a subterranean passage.

In this place, they observe a child version of Henry find an wounded, fearful individual. As the boy offers aid, the man fires a gun, wounding the boy in the hand. In a desperate act of self-defense, Henry ends the threat with a rock. "Is this what corrupted him?" Holly wonders aloud. It was a factor, but the act went deeper than a simple act of survival.

Like many elements in volume 2, the truth about the events in the tunnel originates in the stage play the prequel play.

A Naval Mystery and A Spy's Mission

The play reveals the legendary naval test, which allegedly sent a vessel into a plane dubbed the Abyss. The ship was attacked, and the lone returnee was the ship's commander, who returned in a catatonic condition with an entirely new blood.

The captain's son, the future Dr. Brenner, attempted to recreate this dimensional breach in Nevada. However, a treacherous employee stole research materials to sell to the Russian agents, who were eager to begin their version of the tests. The man in the mine shaft is the one who stole the materials.

The Briefcase's Contents

Considering what is understood of Brenner's work, the briefcase most likely held samples of the altered blood. As shown, Henry is already bleeding. Exposure likely occurred upon opening the case, causing the awakening of his powers—traits he would inadvertently transfer to the kids Brenner would experiment on.

A second theory, the container could have held strange particles that eventually found its way to Hawkins Laboratory, where it acts to anchor the parallel world. The stage play explains that Henry somehow wound up in the Abyss, reappearing 12 hours later fundamentally changed. Throughout the play, he fights the influence of a sinister presence, similar to how the character Will was controlled by the Mind Flayer in season 2.

A Weaponized Emotion

The reason Henry avoids the cave associated with the mine highlights how profoundly traumatic the event was for him. Even as he controls the Hive Mind and works to collapse the Abyss into Hawkins, a fragment of his psyche still exists. The villain weaponizes terror, and the show is setting up a climactic battle between him and Will, who has overcome his personal demons to become stronger.

Will's growth has neutralized a key tactic of Vecna. More importantly, Will now is aware of what the monster's own weakness, which could provide a key upper hand in the endgame conflict to come.
