Thomas Tuchel Wants Jude Bellingham's Aggression So Long As England's Ace Sets Aside Egotism at the Door.

A single omission proved sufficient. A second one and it might have appeared spiteful from Thomas Tuchel, a coach who is far too wily not to know that winning the World Cup is probably going to require help from the talented midfielder, although it is equally Bellingham's responsibility to blend into the tactical structures and team pecking order required with the national team now that he is returned to the manager's supportive environment.

Tuchel wants his aggressive mentality, his intensity, but it is about harnessing it constructively. Skill matters but England know from bitter experience that there is a price to pay when celebrity prevails. Nevertheless, a point has been made.

The midfielder had much to ponder after being left out of the recent team selection. He watched England book their place at the tournament without him. He watched the young talent perform brilliantly as a high-pressing No 10. He heard the coach discuss loving the squad's spirit and ethics. Naturally, he has responded in top form, finding the back of the net for Real Madrid against Barcelona and the Italian side. His selection was inevitable; a second snub would have left his World Cup hopes in serious doubt.

The hope is that the manager will have a Bellingham focused on frightening rivals instead of teammates. After all, in purely sporting terms, there is no advantage to creating tension with a top talent in the world. The ideal scenario is that Bellingham’s time out of the team has demonstrated that an international career is a precious, precarious thing. Tuchel, on his side, can now provide cover for the 22-year-old after demonstrating that he is willing to make big calls.

“There is no problem with him, and no concern about his personality,” Tuchel stated. “Bellingham just has a competitive streak. It takes a sharp mentality to reach the heights that he reached. We all need to help him and establish a setting where he can channel his drive against rivals and in pursuit of success we are building as a team.”

Bellingham took up most of the attention at the manager's selection reveal for the upcoming final group games versus Serbia and Albania. Any other news? Indeed, what about Phil Foden? This is another prodigious playmaker who needs coaching. Foden has not played for England since March and has struggled to reach his best this year but the boss could not ignore the 25-year-old after his display in his club's victory versus the German side this week.

The issue, though, is how to use the multiple playmakers at the team's disposal. Morgan Rogers and Eze merit inclusion and there will be a good argument to select another youngster once he is fit after a ongoing injury. Is selecting multiple creators to the World Cup be an overkill? Gareth Southgate failed to discover the correct balance at the European Championship. He compromised by forcing Foden and Bellingham into the starting lineup, cramping Harry Kane’s influence in the process.

It is hard to see the current manager doing similar if it disrupts the offensive structure. There is room for one No 10, with quick attackers on the wings. Clarity is beneficial. He is in as a central attacker. Bournemouth’s Alex Scott, selected for the first time, is a No 8 and the recalled Wharton will compete with another player as a defensive midfielder. There will also be no position on the wing for Foden, who must play central. Tuchel prefers him near Kane. “It does not make sense to ask Foden: ‘You are needed on the pitch but there’s no space in your preferred role, can you play the left side? Can you play right wing?” he said. “Phil is to feature in the No 9-10ish position, in the middle of the pitch. I've long had this idea about him for years. I think it fits his style best.”

Tuchel agreed there are times when Foden has not looked himself in an national jersey. “You feel almost like, ‘Does he like it?’ And someone of his caliber who has this childish joy to play football, then obviously an issue exists, whether it's his role, the setup, I don’t know.

“In my opinion he is also so used to representing his club in a certain structure, to have a clear task. I think he benefits a lot from clarity. What is my position? Where exactly should I turn? Where am I supposed to accelerate the match? Where do I have to defend?

The manager talked about Bellingham bursting through for tap-ins and Foden scoring strikes from 18 yards. He added he has a extended list of 60 players. Several players, Myles Lewis-Skelly, James Trafford and Ruben Loftus-Cheek have been omitted. Nico O’Reilly is recognized for his excellent performances for Manchester City at left-back. Intrigue abounds.

Leaving out of the striker means there is no direct replacement for Kane in the selection. Interestingly, Tuchel hinted at using Foden as a false 9 against Serbia or the other. Other options, the United forward, the midfielder and Jarrod Bowen are alternatives should he be unavailable. With qualification secured, this is a moment for testing tactics.

At the same time, it is additionally a moment to foster Kane’s relationship with Bellingham going. It is remarkable that you have to go back to the latter setting up the captain to net in an international match against Scotland in September 2023 to discover the sole instance in 35 games for England when the duo linked up for a score. Tuchel will know that the two stars only passed to each other once during the team's ties with one opponent and another at the European Championship. The connection is missing.

“At this point at some point it falls to the duty of the players,” Tuchel said. He is not afraid to deliver home truths. Remains a feeling of Bellingham being on trial. He may not be assured to begin against Serbia and Albania. The manager wants him committed but he will be monitoring him carefully. Set aside self-importance at the door. It will make a very strong squad into an even better one.
