The Legendary Williams, Receives Wild Card for First Melbourne Major in Half a Decade.

Seven-time Grand Slam title holder Venus Williams has secured a wild-card entry for the Australian Open, which kicks off on the 18th of January in the city of Melbourne.

A Landmark Return to the Australian Courts

The event organizers announced on the weekend that the 45-year-old legend will make a return at Melbourne Park a staggering 28 years after her debut. Back in 1998, she overcame her sibling Serena in the early stage before exiting in the quarter-finals to fellow American Lindsay Davenport.

Preparing for the Summer Swing

Venus had previously revealed in the month of November her plans to compete in Auckland, New Zealand, where she also received a special entry, two weeks before the Melbourne event. Organizers noted that Williams is scheduled to participate in Australia's Hobart International a week later, just before the action begins at the main venue.

Her most recent visit in the city was in the year 2021, and she has been a finalist in the women’s singles on two separate instances, losing to Serena in the finals of 2003 as well as 2017.

"I’m excited to return in Australia and eagerly anticipating competing during the summer season," Williams said. "I’ve had so many unforgettable moments there, and I’m thankful for the opportunity to return to a place that has been so significant to my career."

Statistical Highlights

Williams' career statistics at Melbourne Park stands at an impressive 54 wins and 21 defeats. The upcoming edition will represent the 22nd time she has appeared in the main draw.

Establishing a New Record

Officials indicated that Williams is poised to be the oldest woman to take part in an Australian Open singles competition, eclipsing the record formerly set by Japanese Kimiko Date, who was 44 when she lost in the opening round at the venue in 2015.

Recent Life Event

In the final days of December, Williams married Danish-born actor and model Andrea Preti in Palm Beach, Florida.
