Manchester United Poised to Sign German Striker Lea Schüller from Bayern Munich
The Women's Super League club are on the verge of completing the signing for prolific Germany striker Lea Schüller on a permanent transfer away from Bayern Munich.
A Marquee Acquisition for United
Schüller, who has six months left on her deal, is known as a consistent goal-getter for her club and the national team. She has scored more than 100 goals for the German giants and found the net 54 times in 82 appearances for Germany. Her arrival will be seen as a marquee coup for the Women’s Super League side.
Departure from Munich has been anticipated after she appeared to be fighting back tears while thanking the club's supporters following a victory over Bayer Leverkusen recently.
Reports in December that the Frauen-Bundesliga was set to lose one of its leading forwards. Per multiple sources, all the paperwork for the transfer have now been completed.
Consistent Goalscoring to Boost the Forward Line
The 28-year-old’s arrival is expected to provide a major uplift to the team's attacking options. Schüller has been remarkably reliable with her finishing in Germany’s top flight.
- Over seven straight seasons, up to and including the most recent campaign, she achieved at least a double-digit tally of league goals.
- She won the Golden Boot in the 2021-22 season with 16 goals.
Building Momentum at Carrington
Securing the German international coincides with a period when United seem to be building positive momentum.
Recent on-pitch successes include securing a place in the Champions League knockout phase playoffs in a seeded position and a victory in the Conti Cup quarter-finals.
In the transfer market, the winter break has brought additional business:
- The signing of Swedish right-back Hanna Lundkvist on a multi-year deal.
- The contract extension for Japanese playmaker Hinata Miyazawa, who has become fan favourite since joining in 2023.
On Miyazawa’s new deal, a senior figure commented: “Miyazawa is now a critical part to the way we play. Her footballing intelligence and skill enables her and the team to control and dictate play from the middle of the park.”
Lundkvist, who has arrived from a club in the American league, said: “You can sense how much they [United] have grown in the last few years, playing in one of the strongest leagues in the world and performing in the top European competition.”
