Ethiopia Receives Valuable Artefacts Following a Long Holding in German Hands
Around Twelve historical objects have been ceremoniously given back to the Ethiopian nation following being kept by a family in Germany for in excess of 100 years.
These treasures, initially acquired in the early twentieth century by Germany's diplomat to Ethiopia Franz Weiss and his wife his partner, were transferred on midweek to the Institute of Ethiopian Studies at the university in Addis Ababa.
The assortment contained headpieces, shields and canvases, each viewed as culturally important in the nation.
"The items continue to serve as a mark of the lasting and positive ties between Germany and Ethiopia," stated the German diplomat, Germany's envoy to the East African country.
Dr. a professor, whose parent was born during the household's assignment in the nation, presented the artefacts at a event witnessed by Tourism Minister the tourism official.
He stated that the family's intention to return the artefacts was to "display their appeal with the people and safeguard the heritage and past connected to my father's birth."
The objects were either gifts or buys, based on the relatives.
"I would like to express gratitude to the Weiss family for actively expressing their profound love for the nation by diligently preserving these treasures and importantly ensuring their repatriation to their legitimate country," said the official.
She added that the artefacts would shortly be available to the public for study and educational purposes, describing the action a landmark in preserving Ethiopia's national treasures.
"Initiatives persist to bring back old items that are found in the custody of collectors and entities all over the world," she said.
During colonial rule in Africa, thousands of historical artefacts were plundered.
This request by the continent's states for the return of looted objects has been answered with a degree of positive outcomes in the past few years - though several items are merely on temporary return.
In the year 2022, the German government was the initial country to repatriate some of the renowned historical items to the West African nation in a bid to address its "troubled past."
