El Kaabi's Breathtaking Strike Secures Morocco's Triumph Over Comoros in Afcon Opener.
The Morocco shook off a jittery start to overcome their island opponents in the tournament's opening game on the weekend, after strikes by Brahim Díaz and substitute El Kaabi in the second half.
This constituted a far from convincing showing, however, from the highly fancied hosts, who are ranked 97 places higher than the tiny island nation in the world rankings and had to toil hard for the three points in rainy conditions at Rabat's Prince Moulay Abdellah stadium.
Nervy Beginning and Spurned Chances
Morocco failed to convert an first-half spot-kick and were locked at 0-0 at half-time despite controlling the ball, finally opening the scoring in the 11th minute of the second half.
It came when full-back Mazraoui did well to keep the ball in play before laying it across for Díaz to sidefoot home.
Every opening game is never easy but we improved in the second half,” commented manager Regragui.
El Kaabi's Moment of Brilliance
Any lingering nerves was subsequently calmed by a piece of sheer genius from Ayoub El Kaabi. Only 10 minutes after coming on, the striker connected with a cross with a stunning overhead kick in the 74th minute, doubling and sealing the win.
Earlier in the match, the Moroccan team could have been ahead in the 11th minute after a spot-kick was awarded for a foul on Díaz. Yet, Rahimi's effort was saved by Comoros goalkeeper Pandor.
Comoros Resistance and Late Opportunity
Comoros comfortably held their more illustrious opponents for long periods until the hosts' individual talent eventually told.
Goalkeeper Yannick Pandor pulled off several other good stops to keep down the score as the game progressed, although his team created a clear opportunity for an equaliser shortly after Díaz's goal, with Rafiki Saïd firing directly into keeper Yassine Bounou.
Fitness Concern for Hosts
The victory was somewhat overshadowed by an apparent injury to Morocco's captain, Romain Saïss, who limped off in the 18th minute apparently in tears.
The defender had only made his comeback to the national side recently after a year’s absence due to ankle surgery.
The win continues Morocco's historic run of successive wins to nineteen, beating the previous record of 15 set by Spain from 2008 and 2009.
