Biden Bowl, Any Takers? Meloni to Sell International Gifts for Good Cause

Passing on unwanted presents can be viewed as slightly impolite – unless it's done in the proper manner.

A Charitable Clear-Out

The leader of Italy, Giorgia Meloni, plans to auction an estimated 270 items bestowed upon her by international figures during her travels. The diverse haul is said to contain gifts including a miniature chainsaw-holding statuette of Argentinian president Javier Milei and a pair of blue python skin shoes with gilded heels.

The presents, combined, have an approximate value of €800,000. They are scheduled to be put up for sale in a public auction by a Rome-based fine art auction house. A date has not been finalized, although the goal is to conduct the sale during the holiday season, with the proceeds donated to non-profit organizations.

Palazzo Chigi Holdings

The items reportedly stored in a secure area on the third floor of the government headquarters. It has been reported that Meloni additionally planning to auction off gifts given to her political forerunners that have been sitting unused over a long period.

The full gift list remains made public, but a glimpse were revealed earlier this year when an 11-page list of all declared gifts was presented in parliament. The discussion centered on whether a legal value limit was being honored. By law, a prime minister is not permitted to keep presents valued above €300.

An International Assortment of Presents

Among the items:

  • A silk accessory from the leader of Albania, reportedly given to Meloni for her birthday during a meeting abroad.
  • A customary Indian garment from the Indian leader.
  • A case of jewelry from the president of Slovakia.
  • A porcelain tea set and six bottles of wine from Hungary's leader.
  • A pottery dish from the ex-American leader.
  • A electronic pad from the leader of Ukraine.
  • Paintings from the Moldovan government.
  • Various other items including makeup, a skateboard, and several rugs from trips to North African and Middle Eastern countries.
"Perhaps the oddest gifts included the Milei figurine and the exotic footwear," one might note.

Political Context

Meloni has been credited, mainly from her allies, with garnering support from global statesmen and positioning Italy as a key protagonist on the global scene once again.

This unique auction symbolizes a novel approach to handle the diplomatic artifacts that build up during a time in office.
