‘All those silly things – do them’: The striker’s path from injury table to goals with Athletic
The first time the Athletic striker featured in England, an teenage representing the reserve team against Bundesliga youth at the English ground in fall 2015, he hit the target. The second time he took the field in British turf, against the Black Cats weeks after, he netted. Another occasion, against Pep Guardiola’s team soon after, sure enough, he did it once more. Upon his comeback to the northwest to take on Manchester United at Leigh’s ground in 2017, he found the back of the net. An excellent finish, too. “Actually,” he states, “it’s a top-class goal I’ve ever scored.” So Athletic did what they had to do: they took him off.
“I became very upset,” the Athletic striker says, before breaking into laughter. “There must be a video somewhere. We traveled to face United and I was pretty good. They didn’t let me play the second half: I hadn’t yet signed agreement, goals were flowing, there were lots of rumours, you know how it is. I’m unsure regarding Newcastle being interested, but I remember reading about the Red Devils, the usual talk. I have no idea how true it was, but even if they had called, my desire was to remain at the club. I feel lucky to be here.”
Real Sociedad release pressure with surreal victory in Basque derby like no other
At the training ground, the Basque Country, the early training is set to begin; following that, the brief trip to the airport and another trip to Britain, on this occasion to face Newcastle in the European elite competition on the upcoming match. Mentioning that phrase brings a smile to his face. It’s turning out to be a challenging campaign for Athletic, partly because of the pressures of competing at this level. Beaten in added time in the derby on Saturday, they have won only one of their recent league fixtures and been defeated by Arsenal and the German side in Europe. Yet, take in the big picture, the big nights he has lived and future challenges, and a sense of thankful reflection from him.
In the 36 months since he had come back to Athletic, Gorka has been a final four contender in Europe, denied at the last hurdle a domestic final by United, and has ridden an historic vessel up the Nervión estuary surrounded by a huge crowd after securing the Spanish cup, the first title in four decades. Currently he stands as Athletic’s top scorer in the European competition, where they are unique and making their first appearance in a decade. “I never imagined this,” he states.
He considered it difficult enough just to earn a spot and that proved true. The son of the ex-La Real star the former professional and a dedicated fan at the opposition side, Gorka is from the Antiguoko academy, the local academy that developed Mikel Arteta, the legendary midfielder and the Bournemouth manager. His move to Athletic came at his teens but after making his senior debut in August 2018, he went through a ACL injury, being released, a demotion and a return before he could finally secure an opportunity, making his comeback to enjoy the highlights of his career.
“You go into the academy thinking you won’t reach the first team but each step you advance through you’re still there and you can notice the proximity. You make it and … departure is necessary.” He had limited game time in six games between his debut and that period. “Then I was sent to the filial [Bilbao Athletic, the Under-23s]. A few matches there and my knee gave way.
“A severe disappointment but In retrospect as a beneficial experience because it made me change the way I saw things. The rehabilitation process is difficult, but it’s beneficial. You develop habits you didn’t have. Previously I was casual, but I would go to training and then head home, typical youth behavior. At the complex, facilities are comprehensive, so utilize it all. Training, prehab. Get in the gym. Should your hips be uneven, address that. With decent ankle function, make it a 12 or a 14. All the minor details: perform them.
“At the top level you’re going to collide with opponents who have been in battles countless occasions. They’re so strong. Reviewing old images: I had slender legs. Injuries are inevitable. Current photos and it’s totally different. Injury made me see that. Practice concludes, but additional work remains. Peers are prepared, really ready; you have to be too.”
Game time is essential. He left upset in the pandemic season, in his early twenties, moving to a lower level. During his Sabadell spell in that season, he netted three goals in forty appearances. During his Amorebieta stint in the second half of 2021-22, the he found his form. “Many experience this: transfers, releases. With a turnaround, work, believe, and if one day a vacancy arises for your role, they might come back for you. Readiness is vital. Upon the recall, it was a dream come true. To then win the Copa del Rey, play in Europe, and make the UCL … pfff.”
Understandably he remarks appreciate the experience. Especially after last year which, at times, was involved suffering. After being leading scorer with sixteen goals, his output dropped to seven in {15 games more|additional matches|
